Review 1:
In the future, the Terrans solar systems Sun is dying and is turning into a Super Nova, a full scale planetary evacuation on the homeworld has been started. But once they get outside of the solar system an enemy beyond the Neutral Zone called the Rexxons are waiting, and the Terrans have violated the Netural Zone treaty. So now there is a war against eachother and you must pilot the 'Epic' class ship and defeat the Rexxons to save humanity.
Epic, simply put is a 3D Space simulator with the same or similar engine to Robocop 3D. The graphics in Epic are good and in 3D, it has a certain feel to Wing Commander and other space type Simulation games in 3D. As said before, the engine is the same as Robocop 3D or very similar and which DID or Digital Image Design (without the abbreviation) uses again in other games they create years later, such as TFX and Inferno (Epic sequel). The sound in Epic isn't what you would call 'fantastic' but is okay, and the music is quite nice. Concluding, this is a great space flight simulator with some nice graphics, but is limited to missions and freedom as you always have to start off in career mode, no arcade unfortunately.
Review 2:
Nowadays, DID is famous for having developed ground-breaking flight sims like TFX, EF2000 and F-22. But before that there was Epic, a 3D space combat simulator. Back then in 1992, this was awaited as being the ultimate space combat game and it promised a lot. But at the end it just wasn't executed well enough and probably rushed out too early to be a really great game and the long awaited Wing Commander-killer.
The in-game graphics as well as the stills and animations in the cut-scenes are great. Epic also features ground combat missions on planets next to the space missions, which wasn't seen before in this type of game. It's fun to play, the presentation overall is very stylish. However, there are only very few missions and some bad design faults. When you play it you will also notice soon that you can't fully pitch, making it more of a 2D shooter than a 3D space sim. Still, Epic is a good game of its own, but it could have been better. If you like space shooters, be sure to give it a try. Needs a slow-down util on faster computers.
