Nahlakh

Tom Proudfoot's first published game, Nahlakh, is a traditional top-down role-playing game that pits your party of eight adventurers against a force of evil that is threatening the land. While the crude ... Note: Faster computers may need a slowdown program to run the game. It works well with my 233 MHz one, but crashes on a friend's 400 MHz. Tom Proudfoot has recently released the game as freeware.

Neophyte: Koplio's Story

In 1996, Alien Software released the first three episodes in the Neophyte universe, an RPG gameworld similar in style to anime RPGs commonly seen on console systems. The episodes, all released as shareware ... be gone, the new operator of their domain name has acquired the rights to distribute these shareware gems on the website. Neophyte: The Spirit Master

In 1996, Alien Software released the first three episodes in the Neophyte universe, an RPG gameworld similar in style to anime RPGs commonly seen on console systems. The episodes, all released as shareware ... trilogy that unfortunately never saw the light of day as a commercial release. Definitely the best anime-based RPG ever made for the PC until SquareSoft got into the fray with Final Fantasy VII.

NetHack
Neverwinther Nights

Review 1: Now you might think this is one of the most anticipated roleplay games in this century but it really isn't. It is actually the game made before by Strategic Simulations Inc. that was setup ... to be found from just exploring the game area and slaying some monsters, but in the end I can only recommend it for those who want to complete their collection of goldbox AD&D games.

Obitus

Obitus is a fun combination of RPG and arcade action that places you in the role of Wil Mason as he finds himself mysteriously transported to the fantasy world of Middlemere. As Wil explores the four shires ... of some tedious elements (for instance, the game requires your character to rest once in a while, and the mazes will tax your patience). Overall, it's Psygnosis' good first foray into the RPG genre.

Omnicron Conspiracy
Oubliette

Oubliette is a great fantasy RPG that dates back to 1983. The game is entirely text, but it does a great job in showing what's going on around you. First, you have to create a few characters. You can create ... I've got into the game 6 times and lost 16 characters) but the great variety of the game will have RPG fans coming back for more! I wasn't even really interested in the genre, and now I'm hooked!

Personal Nightmare

This rare PC conversion of a great Amiga game is arguably Horrorsoft's best adventure before they turned to the RPG genre to produce cult classics Elvira and Waxworks. As with Horrorsoft's other games, ... starts out peacefully with you arriving at a hotel... before things go terribly wrong. Great mouse-driven interface, plot, writing, and puzzles make this an underrated classic. Highly recommended!

Phantasie

Review 1: The first volume in the great but simple roleplay series. You can create up to six different characters each with their own look. There are of course the most usual features included suck as ... caves, towns and castles. Funny combat engine. Goal of the game is to defeat the Black Knights who have taken over your island. Nice thing is that you can store your money on some bankaccount.

Phantasie 3

Review 1: The third and final volume in the great but simple roleplay series. You can create up to six different characters each with their own look. There are of course the most usual features included ... and excellent variety of spells and monsters. These games were a big hit on Commodore 64, but their 4-color IBM port, predictably, didn't do as well. Too bad Phantasie 2 was never ported to the PC.

Planet's Edge

One of the longest and most overlooked RPG ever, Planet's Edge is a solid offering from the makers of Might & Magic series. Despite the lack of pedigree and fame that the M&M series enjoys, Planet's ... each system. To get around this, just use the keyboard command "O" instead of the mouse. This will make your ship orbit whatever planet is selected in the nav console-- even the first one.

Pool of Radiance

Review 1: In the annals of RPG gaming, few series can boast of being "pioneers" of the genre more than SSI with its "Gold Box" series, all based on AD&D mechanics and worlds licensed ... a lot of information about the different classes and races and the limitations that they impose. For the more seasoned AD&D and/or RPG fan this game can be a great challenge and fun to play.

Pools of Darkness

Review 1: In the annals of RPG gaming, few series can boast of being "pioneers" of the genre more than SSI with its "Gold Box" series, all based on AD&D mechanics and worlds licensed ... leaving the city, Lord Bane, along with four of his lieutenants, claims the entire land of Faerun as his own, and magically teleports, destroys, and removes many cities off the face of the land...

Prince of Destruction

Review 1: Price of Destruction a decent roleplay games written for Windows (not that many of those around). You start the game with an almost premade character but with a little customization you can ... The keyboard only controls and NPC conversation system may turn off some, so the game is not for everybody, but to my tastes, adventuring in Nestaria was a good way to pass some time. Recommended!

Prophecy of The Shadow

This is the "black sheep" of SSI's RPG stable that was designed to entice new gamers into the RPG genre: very simple character creation and stats, appealing VGA graphics and "cinematic" ... easy combat. A good example of a game that does everything well, but nothing extraordinarily. Still, it's a solid and highly playable game that's worth a look, especially if you're new to the genre.

Quarterstaff: Tomb of Setmoth

The "holy grail" of Infocom affionados, Quarterstaff: The Tomb of Setmoth is notorious for being the only Infocom game that was never made for the PC. It was instead released only on the Macintosh, ... it again. Although fun, Quarterstaff simply doesn't have the same play value as the all-text games. Recommended for Infocom fans, or any budding RPGer who don't mind some adventure game elements.

Questron 2

The follow-up to SSI's Apple II classic Questron and spiritual cousin to EA's Legacy of the Ancients, Questron II picks up the story years after its predecessor ends. This time, Mesron the Great Wizard ... Evil Book of Magic. Excellent plot, puzzles, and many nice touches (e.g. the casinos you can gamble in) make this one of the best solo RPGs ever and a true successor to Legacy of Ancients in spirit.

Ragnarok (a.k.a. Valhalla)

Ragnarok (or Valhalla as some might know it) is a Rogue- like game with an early Ultima logic (for the uninitiated, Rogue is an ASCII-based open-ended dungeon crawl that was very popular since the early ... sound effects which make the game much more atmospheric. You can therefore download Valhalla, the updated European release which *includes* music and sound effects, from the download link below :)

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny

The first game in the Realms of Arkania trilogy was the Blade of Destiny. It combines all the best characteristics of that times RPG's, like an extensive story line, first person view mode, cave exploring, ... confusing is the fact that all the shops, inns, taverns and weaponsmiths look exactly the same from the outside. Apart from this… the game is good, and a nice way to start off the trilogy. Have fun!

Realms of Arkania: Star Trail

The Realms of Arkania trilogy was originally a RPG game produced by Attic Entertainment. It was intended for Germany only, but soon the game was famous beyond the German border and the trilogy had to be ... To finish it all off, let me just say that if you like RPG's you should download this game right now. You will not regret it. This is a legendary game, and even by today's standards a great game!

Red Crystal

The only RPG ever published by QQP, Red Crystal is a very kind of RPG that can best be described as RPG meets strategy-- similar to Omnitrend's Paladin and Sierra's Birthright, your goal is to maximize ... the RPG portion truly stands out. Worth a look if you are interested in seeing tactical elements in RPGs, though. Another innovative feature here is that two players can play the game simultaneously.

Rescue at Rigel

One of Epyx' earliest RPGs ever made for PC, Rescue at Rigel is a simplistic science fiction RPG where you are given only 60 minutes to find and transport the 10 human captives from an alien moonbase to ... although the game isn't as difficult as you would think. Doesn't stand the test of time as well as Temple of Apshai or Rogue, but anyone looking for a truly early, simple RPG should take a look.

Revolt of Don's Knights

Revolt of Don's Knights is an awful first-person RPG that lacks the depth and charm of more well-known RPGs (Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2 come to mind). The plot is not earth-shattering, but at least it's ... graphics, in VGA, are passable, but the dungeon is far too drab, too empty, and too boring to sustain your interest for long. All in all, a thoroughly below-average game anyone can afford to miss.

Ring Cycle, The

An awful game that practically spelled the end for Mike Singleton's long, illustrious career that began with Lords of Midnight for the Spectrum computer. Simply put, The Ring Cycle is basically the (incredibly ... and steer clear of The Ring Cycle. It's just old, rotten apple in a new barrel. No wonder the game quickly disappeared from store shelves and became one of Psygnosis' most obscure titles. Shame.

Rings of Power

Rings of Power is one of the rare isometric RPGs on SEGA Genesis (Megadrive in Europe) that is much more similar to computer RPGs than typical console fare. It also happens to be very good, as well as ... page, it actually was designed for PC until EA decided at the time that Genesis games made more money), but thanks to today's emulators you can now experience this forgotten game. Highly recommended!

Rings of Zilfin

Quietly released by SSI in 1987, Rings of Zilfin is a PC conversion of classic Apple II RPG that places more emphasis on the storyline, cinematic "cutscenes," and ease of play. It is the fist game designed by Ali Atabek, who would later part ways with SSI to form Mindcraft and create the famous Magic Candle series that further improves on the strong character development of Rings of Zilfin.

Rogue

Review 1: You ever heard them talk of the rogue-style games? Did you ever wonder what they mean by this? Well, in short words: Rogue was the first open ended ever changing RPG. Everytime you play it ... It may not stand the test of time very well after all these years, but for those who want to get a sense of where today's blockbuster dungeon crawls the likes of Diablo descend from, Rogue is it.

Rogue (Epyx)

The only commercial release of dungeon-crawl classic Rogue, Epyx' version is 1.45, while Jon Lane's original release (also on this site) is 1.1. I'm not quite sure what the difference is/are between the ... may not stand the test of time very well after all these years, but for those who want to get a sense of where today's blockbuster dungeon crawls the likes of Diablo descend from, Rogue is it."

Rogue: Adventure

Review 1: Rogue: Adventure is an ASCII colour adventure game. You travel through levels killings monsters, picking up weapons and potions and collecting money. You have stats like Hits, Strength and ... It's charm lies in its very simple control system, graphics (B=a bat, S=a snake etc) and almost endless replayability. There isn't a whole lot else to say about it, just download it yourself and see.

Romancing Sa-Ga 3

Romancing Sa-Ga series is one of the best example of hit RPG series for the Super Nintendo that are tremendously popular in Japan but little known outside - in this case, for the usual reason: Squaresoft ... now play the game in English (it's not 100% complete, but it is definitely very close to that). Here is hoping that the other games in the series will soon be translated as well by dedicated fans.
