3D Construction Kit (a.k.a. 3D Virtual Studio)

One of Incentive's final product before changing its business into producing virtual realities is easily one of the best-- if not THE best-- game-creation program ever made. It lets you create believable ... designers. Anyone who likes this application should check out the sequel 3D Construction Kit 2, which was released shortly after this for the PC and Amiga, and is available for download on this site.

3D Construction Kit 2

3D Construction Kit 2 (3DCK2) is a great sequel to Incentive/Domark's 3D Construction Kit, released a year earlier. As with the first title, 3DCK2 isn't really a game but a powerful application that lets ... a much more user-friendly interface, and most importantly, sharp 256-color VGA graphics. If you ever want to create your own 3D game, you'd be amazed at what this small 1992 application can do.

Adventure Construction Set

As its name implies, Adventure Construction Set is a program that allows you to create your own "adventure." The result is really an RPG, due to heavy emphasis on monsters and statistics. As ... executable to give out to your friends. Overall, a solid, versatile package that is well worth a look if you like top-down RPGs. Too bad the dated graphics don't stand up too well with time, though.

Anim VGA
Bannermania

Bannermania is a fun little application that lets you create banners of all shapes and sizes, and print them out in color. The program is much more limited than Broderbund's venerable Print Shop series, ... though ;)). In all, it's nice banner-creating application, although similar to other applications, it doesn't hold up very well with time. Worth a look for historical/nostalgic value though.

Bard's Construction Set

Make your own Bard's Tale versions with this cool construction set!

BBC Gardeners' World: 3D Designer

The first in a long and reasonably successful line of 3D garden designer software, Europress' 3D Designer is licensed by BBC to use the name of its popular "Gardeners' World" TV program on the ... to 3D at any time. All in all, an excellent early application in the 'niche' genre of garden design - well worth a look both to amateur gardeners and collectors of quaint applications. Recommended!

Cornerstone

Commonly known as "the cause of Infocom's fall," Cornerstone is a revolutionary relational database application that unfortunately never sold as many copies as it deserved. The program was very ... development and Infocom's misguided shift to business software, and by the time the program was finally released in 1985, it would face a much stiffer competition, especially from dBase III.

Dr. Sbaitso

A cool personal psychiatrist program shipped with Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro, Dr. Sbaitso was designed to showcase digitized voices Sound Blaster card was able to produce. Tell your problems or ... me?") and the digital Dr. Sbaitso will intone various random bits of wisdom (e.g. "Tell me why") in broken mechanical voice. It's a neat little program that's good for a few laughs :)

Dungeon Master's Assistant Volume I

Dungeon Master's Assistant Volume I and Volume II are not games but a pair of useful utility programs that prospective AD&D dungeon masters can use to help generate and organize their pencil-and-paper ... and exotic items, spells, and characters not found in the standard set. Overall, good utilities that AD&D players will find very useful, although they are of little use to anyone else.

Dungeon Master's Assistant Volume II

Dungeon Master's Assistant Volume I and Volume II are not games but a pair of useful utility programs that prospective AD&D dungeon masters can use to help generate and organize their pencil-and-paper ... and exotic items, spells, and characters not found in the standard set. Overall, good utilities that AD&D players will find very useful, although they are of little use to anyone else.

Fanta Vision

Fanta Vision is an excellent graphics application that allows you to design your own movies by drawing pictures, animating them, and adding sound. The program was very sophisticated for its time (1988), ... leaving the program fall into undeserved obscurity. Certainly for what it does, it can't compare to modern animation programs. But for 1988, this was arguably the best application of its kind.

Flight Sim Toolkit

Ever wanted to make your flight simulator? Well, this program has everything you need. You can create theatres of operations, model units, etc… There are several games built around this, the better being ... year. As for now, X-Plane is the best you can get, and you can try it for free. There's no combat involved, but the flight modelling is top notch and the aircraft design tool is very easy to use.

Hacker (Wadesoft)

From the readme, "This program was created as a programming aid: to help WadeSoft decipher various file formats, such as .WAV and .TGA files. It can be used for this purpose as well as another - to ... version 1.0 (for download here) and the much-improved version 2.0 were made freeware in 1996. I have used the program for several things, and I found it tremendously useful. It still works today :)

Hudson City Sector One

Hudson City Sector One is a little-known utility program - more appropriately "gamemaster's aid" - for use in managing ongoing games of pen & paper RPGs set in Hudson City, part of HERO Games's ... no doubt they failed miserably. Even at no cost, few RPG GMs would be tempted to try this confusing package. Worth a look only for the most patient and dedicated of HERO pen & paper players.

Lap Link 3 for DOS
Lotus Agenda 2.0

Lotus Agenda is arguably not only the best "personal information manager" (PIM) software ever made, but also one of the best applications ever seen on a PC. A DOS program originally marketed ... Agenda 2.0, into the public domain. Follow the install instructions to see for yourself why thousands of people say this is one of the most useful applications they ever own. Highly recommended.

MAC in DOS
Marvel Screen Posters

Yet another module for the world's most popular screensaver After Dark (also see Star Trek: The Screensavers) The program features screens from released and unreleased Marvel comics, great sound effects, and diverse modules to make staring at the monitor more entertaining. Not as informative as LucasArts' Star Wars Entertainment , but still a great value for all Marvel fans.

MegaZeux

One of the best game-related applications ever made, MegaZeux is a versatile Game Creation System (GCS) created by Gregory Janson, creator of acclaimed ZZT games Code Red and many more. Essentially a souped-up ... 2.51S3.1 (most recent version of MegaZeux, needed for newer games) GETPW.EXE - tool for detecting passwords and deprotecting password-protected worlds. I recommend using MZXS31.EXE for running games.

Moslo 1.32

Slowdown-utility, very useful for old games designed to run on an XT or 286.

Origin FX

One of Origin's least known releases is a solid screensaver collection that features posters and scenes from famous Origin games (e.g. Wing Commander and Ultima). The screensaver modules are not as varied ... Johnny Castaway and LucasArts' Star Wars Screen Entertainment are both much better value for your money, leaving Origin FX at best a curious "miss" in Origin's otherwise stellar career.

Pinball Construction Set

Based on the same engine as Music Construction Set, Pinball Construction Set is another original application that remain as fun and playable today as it was years ago. The program lets you construct a pinball table from the ground up: place hoops, targets, rails, and many other components on the table, then play your creation. Definitely one of the best uses of 34KB I've ever seen. Great design, great game.

Star Trek: The Screensaver

Yet another module for the world's most popular screensaver After Dark. The program features the original cast, great sound effects, and diverse modules to make staring at the monitor more entertaining. Not as informative as LucasArts' Star Wars Entertainment, but still a great value for all Trekkie fans.

Stereolusions

A cool program for Windows that can create stereograms-- pictures that form 3D images when you cross your eyes properly-- from any picture. Many graphics formats are supported, and the program also includes excellent guides on how stereograms work, and overview of different techniques used to create them. No more need to buy those "Magic Eye" books :)

ThinkTank

ThinkTank is an excellent "outliner" application, a niche genre of applications that were more popular on the Macintosh in the early 1980s. Outliner software allows you to organize your ideas ... the PC. The program has a command-line interface similar to Lotus 1-2-3, and is entirely character-based. Thanks to Symantec, you can now try out one of the lesser-known applications free of charge.

What Are You Doing Today, Charlie Brown?

What Are You Doing Today, Charlie Brown? is a nice calendar program for Windows that features hundreds of Peanuts comic strips. You can create to-do lists, set reminders for events, and group different ... Overall, a nice little application that fans of Charlie Brown and his gang will want to add to their collection -- I just use it to read various comic strips, but that is much more than enough ;)
