Colonization for Windows

Review 1:

This Sid Meier classic is not severely underrated but certainly deserves as much acclaim as his classic Civilization for the novel design and refreshing emphasis on colony development as opposed to military might like Civil War games of yore. Use various specialist units to build and strengthen your colony through trade with Great Britain and native Indians before declaring independence for the final war for freedom. This rare Windows version of the game is already patched for Windows 95, and features sharper graphics and AI than the original DOS release.

Review 2:

Colonization for Windows was made by Brian Reynolds and Sid Meier in 1994 as a turn-based strategy game. In the opening sequence you see an old map with an animated ship going from east to west. Mythical monsters and artistic renderings of various sea tales pass as you head into what could be the end of the earth. Right at the opening, the art draws you in and makes your eyes say wow at the maps beauty. Inside, you'll see a familiar Civilization theme with water all around, until you find that pebble of land to call your own. Different is the details. The sea holds fishes, the hills precious metals, the forest various furs to trade not to mention the locals and European travelers, who meet you in a pop-up window. Plus, when a founding father achieves something, you'll see a town showing that character.

The first thing you must decide is where you want to start the game: In the new world, in America or build your own world. Next, choose difficulty: Discoverer, Explorer, Conquistador, Governor or Viceroy. After that, what country are you going to represent? England, France, Spain, Netherlands? After selecting a name, you get to settle a colony, trade whatever gods it produces with your home country. But be certain to guard it against those who would rather conquer a colony instead of settling one themselves. There is of course more to the game's intricacy than this, but you have to play it to find out.

There are a few sounds like the applause when a new colony is founded but no internal game music. However, who needs the "Colonization Jukebox" when you can play whatever CD you want! A cool feature but I would still like to hear what the internal music sounds like so I am going to deduct points for that.

Addictiveness is surprisingly high! When I first downloaded this, I was hooked. I never played this before and as soon as I forced myself off of it, after a week or two, I wrote a review about it. It's that good! It is the fifth and final standard which all games are measured. And if 5 out of 5 is as high as I can go, than this measures measure a 10 in replay.
